A Tampa man was arrested in Ocala after deputies said he killed his roommate with a machete early Saturday morning.

Candelario Herrera-Vazquez, 24, is facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death of the 26-year-old man, who has not yet been identified.

Investigators said Herrera-Vazquez became involved in a physical altercation with the victim at about 2 a.m.

Detectives were called to the apartment the following morning after one of the other people who lives in the Tampa apartment discovered the man's body inside a locked bedroom.

The man had suffered upper-body trauma, which deputies said was inflicted with a machete.

During the course of the investigation, deputies learned Herrera-Vazquez had fled to Sarasota County, where he threw the machete in a public trash can, the report said.  The machete was later recovered by deputies.

Herrera-Vazquez then bought a bus ticket to Mexico and boarded a bus in Wimauma.  The bus stopped in Ocala, where he was detained by Marion County Sheriff's deputies.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
