A taxiway at the Hernando County Airport is still closed thanks to Tropical Storm Debby.

Debby's torrential rains opened up multiple sinkholes at the facility. The largest sinkhole is about 12 feet deep and 40 feet wide.

Testing on the sinkholes just wrapped up and airport officials say they don't anticipate more problems so the repairs can begin as soon as a contractor is hired.

Airport manager Don Silvernell said they want to make sure things stay safe.

"We wanted to make sure that we fixed it and fixed it right the first time," Silvernell said. "We don't want to have to come back and redo what we already have done."

Silvernell says the next step is to find a contractor. They're hoping FEMA will pay for the repairs.

Airport officials hope to have the taxiway fixed in the next two months.
