A school crossing guard and a driver were injured Monday morning in a series of crashes involving a bicyclist and two cars.

Deputies said the chain of events started at 7:15 a.m. at a school crossing near Madeira Beach Elementary and Madeira Beach Middle school.

According to reports, Michelle Tallman, 37, was driving a 2011 Honda Pilot west on American Legion Drive when she prepared to turn south onto Duhme Road.

The traffic on Duhme Road was backed up due to school drop-off traffic, so Tallman maneuvered into the curb lane, where she hit a 2005 Mazda Tribute driven by Kari Monefeldt, 44.

The impact caused Monefeldt's car to spin into the path of Hung The Nguyen, 92, who was riding his bicycle north at the time.  Hung swerved to avoid the crash and accidentally sideswiped Susan Daughtery, 89, who was working as a crossing guard at the time.

Monefeldt was taken to Largo Medical Center with minor injuries.  Daughtery was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Tallman, who was not injured, was cited for careless driving.

Hung was not injured.

Authorities are asking drivers to be particularly careful around school crossings now that school is back in session, as traffic has increased in those areas and more pedestrians are out earlier in the day.
