Deputies across the state are continuing their search for two stolen Hillsborough County school buses.

Although officials don't believe the thieves will be using them to wreak havoc at the RNC next week, they don't know for sure.

Someone took the buses from Miles Elementary in Tampa just days before school started. Deputies are required to notify the Department of Homeland Security when these types of vehicles are stolen. And it gives them a heightened sense of alarm with the RNC in town.

"It's speculation on any number of uses that these buses could be stolen for. Speculations (have) been they could be used for (the RNC) but we don’t have any indication of that," said Detective Larry McKinnon with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Even if the bus bandits had plans to bring it to the RNC, the school system already has some security measures in place that could thwart that scheme.

"We will have some of our security officers on our buses going on and off Harbor Island where there are going to be some checkpoints," said Steve Hegarty, with Hillsborough County Public Schools.

The security crews will keep in contact with local law enforcement to get through those check points which are relatively close to the RNC events.

Officials say it won't just be school buses getting an extra once over. Any large vehicles are of special interest downtown while thousands of visitors descend upon the area.
