A Port Charlotte man's attempt to steal a television ended when he crashed his bicycle into the back of a detective's vehicle, deputies said.

Jonathan Ryan Fontaine, 32, is facing several charges in connection with the incident, which happened 3 p.m. on Tuesday at a Walmart in Port Charlotte.

According to reports, Walmart security called to report that a man had stolen a 32-inch television and ridden off with it on his bicycle.

A few minutes later, two detectives who were responding to another incident saw Fontaine with the TV on his bicycle near U.S. 41 and Midway Boulevard, the report said.

One detective drove ahead and stopped in front of Fontaine while the other got out of his car and tried to stop the suspect on foot.

Deputies said that Fontaine turned around to look at the detective running after him and slammed his bicycle into the rear of the other detective's vehicle.

Fontaine hit his head when he crashed.  Emergency medical crews checked him out and medically cleared him.

Walmart security arrived and identified Fontaine as the man who stole the television, deputies said.

Fontaine was arrested and taken to Charlotte County Jail, where he remains on $2,000 bond.
