A new laser police are using in Lakeland could mean a costly ticket for people who tailgate other drivers.

Officers will point the laser at the car in front, then point it at the car in back.

The laser technology determines how much reaction time the driver in the back is allowing for a sudden stop.

Studies show anything less than 1.5 seconds is not safe.

Officers will implement the use of the lasers with a grace period. Once the grace period ends, though, officers will start issuing citations to drivers who are 1.4 seconds or less from the vehicle in front of them.
