Democrat Amanda Murphy has defeated Republican Bill Gunter in the race for the 36th District House seat.

That was the spot vacated by Mike Fasano when he became Pasco County tax collector.

Murphy received 51 percent of the vote. Gunter received 49 percent of the vote.

"It was a nail biter," Murphy said about watching the results come in.

Murphy said she received a call from Gunter wishing her luck.

"Tonight the big job starts," she said. "I have big shoes to fill and this district expects someone that is going to take care of them and do it instantly. So, that's what I'll be focusing on tomorrow."
