Relief from spiking flood insurance rates may be on the way for some residents in Temple Terrace.

The city is receiving a new classification rating, which is expected to drop two points - and help with fighting rising flood insurance premiums.

Temple Terrace's rating is expected to drop from an 8 to a 6 on FEMA's flood scale. The lower the score on the scale, the lower the flood risk, which translates to good news, and potentially lower insurance rates, for homeowners who live in flood-prone areas.

"It's developed to credit communities who have flood plain management activities," said Judy Read with Temple Terrace Public Works. "That exceeds the minimum NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) minimum requirements. "

Because the city has been proactive in managing and clearing their stormwater system to help with water drainage and educating the public on the issue, Temple Terrace residents now have a chance at those lower flood insurance rates.

FEMA is expected to confirm the scores by the end of the month.
