Six people were taken to area hospitals early Wednesday after a chain reaction crash along Interstate 75 in Pasco County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 3:30 a.m. on southbound I-75 near State Road 56.

Troopers said two cars were stopped on the side of the highway with hazard lights flashing as they tended to a flat tire on one of the cars. That's when a 2004 BMW, being driven by 47-year-old John Hegarty of Wesley Chapel went off the road and struck one of the parked cars, authorities said.

The car was knocked into the other parked car. Several people were standing around and in between the cars at the time of the crash.

The six people hurt were transported with varying degrees of injuries to Tampa General and St. Joseph's hospitals. Their identities and conditions have not been released.

Investigators arrested Hegarty on charges of  felony DUI with serious bodily injury. Authorities said that driver also has been charged with driving while license suspended with knowledge and failing to drive in designated lane. Troopers said Hegarty's blood alcohol content was .10. The legal limit in Florida is .08.

Hegarty was taken to the Pasco County jail. He only suffered minor injuries in the crash.
