The lead "elf" in East Lake works year-round to create new toys for girls and boys.

Th elf is Bob Helms, president of the Toy Makers of East Lake.

The club's mission is to provide brightly painted, simple wooden toys to children in physical or emotional distress.

The handmade toys are brand new and take more than an hour to craft.

"One day, an 11-year-old young lady looked at the toy we gave her and said this is made of wood," Helms said. "I said, 'yes.' She said, 'Oh, you don't see this much anymore, do you?' "

In addition to the wooden creations, the Toy Makers fix up donated and discarded bicycles and present them to children.

The group originated in Pasco County in 1982. This Pinellas group started more than a decade ago.

Patients at All Children's Hospital, families at the Ronald McDonald House and scores of others have received the toys. In fact, the group's hardworking and dedicated volunteers recently donated their 300,000th toy.

More than 7,000 last year came from this location alone.

The Toy Makers of East Lake is an outreach mission of East Lake United Methodist Church. Businesses, civic groups and others donate the wood, tools and other materials to the group.

"We say we bring smiles to children one toy at a time," Helms said.
