A popular Weeki Wachee golf club is closing - at least temporarily.

Owners of The Dunes Golf Club at Seville say they plan to suspend play for the next several months because of the "negative golf economic climate in Hernando County," according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Longtime course manager Jim Cocchi told the Times the decision was made to save the cost of course maintenance during a time of year when business is slow. He said at least part of the course's money problems came from back-to-back hits by tropical storms that caused $350,000 in damage.

Cocchi said he had to lay off 21 people this week.

The course owners do say they hope to be able reopen in the fall.

The Dunes is located within the 1,100-acre Seville development off U.S. 19, just south of the Hernando-Citrus counties border and has been open since the late 1980s. It has relied largely on an aging population to keep its business going.
