A downtown Tampa building was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after noxious fumes were released during repair work on an air conditioner system.

According to Tampa Police, the Park Tower at 400 North Tampa Street was evacuated just after noon due to a foul odor making people sick.

The building has since been reopened. Crews had tested air samples on each floor to determine if the building was safe.

Two people were taken to local hospitals as a precautionary measure. One person had trouble breathing, while the other complained of chest pains. In addition, four workers were treated at the scene.

Officials said the workers were in the process of removing the chiller from the air conditioning system when it appears as though residual refrigerant was released.

Police briefly closed two blocks of North Tampa Street from East Twiggs Street to Kennedy Boulevard, as well as Madison Street from North Tampa Street to North Franklin Street. The roads have since been reopened.
