A Hardee County teenager was killed in a crash in Polk County over the weekend.
Deputies say 17-year-old Monica Gonzalez of Bowling Green died in a crash late Sunday in Mulberry.
According to reports, Lezet Mendoza, 27, was heading eastbound on State Road 60, just west of County Line Road in Mulberry, in a white 1997 Ford Explorer she said she saw a dark shadow in the roadway.
Mendoza said she swerved to avoid the shadow and her SUV slid and rolled over repeatedly.
Gonzalez and another passenger were ejected.
Investigators say neither of them were wearing seat belts.
Mendoza had a seatbelt on and suffered only minor injuries.
Deputies said neither speed nor impairment appeared to be a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
