It was a dark stretch of I-275 in Tampa on a hot July night in 2012.

William Angel, 20, was driving home with two close friends, Robert Newberry and Jay Davis, after a night out.

Just after 3 a.m., their car was hit head-on by another vehicle going the wrong way. Angel was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's been extremely hard,” his mother, Lynn Angel, said recently. "Obviously, there's not a day that goes by that we don't think about him."

Christopher Ponce, 23, of Tampa is accused of driving drunk and going the wrong way on the interstate, causing the deadly crash. He was put under house arrest and ordered to wear a GPS monitoring ankle bracelet until trial.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says that on May 9, Ponce took the bracelet off and disappeared. He faces several charges, including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

"This is not fair to William," Lynn Angel said.

Angel's family has created a website asking people for information about Ponce and where he might be.

"This really makes me feel like I'm working toward a goal of capturing this guy, and that the information is out there, said Wade Angel Jr., William's brother. "So, yeah, it helps."

So far, a few leads have come in, and they've been turned over to authorities.

"It gives you a focus. It helps you get through the day," said Lynn Angel.

Lynn Angel said she's still having a tough time, especially with the one-year anniversary of William's death coming up.

"We loved William," she said. "We still do."

She said she hopes some good can come from the tragedy.

"It has brought our family closer together," she said. "It has brought friends a lot closer. We're stronger, even though we didn't need this in order to do that."

She said she wants to be able to forgive.

"Through adversity, you gain strength and go forward, and you have to because that's part of your journey," she said.

But she said this journey won't be complete until she can speak for her son in court.

Crimestoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a $1,000 award leading for information leading to the whereabouts of Christopher Ponce. The number to call is 1-800-873-8477.
