Possible bed bugs have taken over a bunk room at a local fire station.

Bugs were discovered Friday night in the bunk room at Station 45 in downtown Clearwater.

An exterminator says the bunk room will need to be shutdown until at least Tuesday.

By Saturday morning, all mattresses in the bunk room were removed.  The room will also need to be fully sanitized.

Rob Shaw with Clearwater Fire Rescue said the discovery of bugs has not significantly impacted operations at Station 45, which serves as the downtown hub for fire rescue.

"We have moved a truck and an engine out of this building to other locations, but this still continues to be served with personnel."

Shaw says it may never be determined where the bugs came from, given the nature of the job.

"Given the nature of where these guys go on daily basis to help people, it is not surprising that perhaps these hitchhikers came on back to the station."

The exterminator will work this weekend to determine if the bugs spread anywhere else inside the fire house.

This isn't the first bed bug infestation at a local fire house.

In 2011, Fire Station 15 in South Tampa was taken over by bed bugs.

It took exterminators months to combat the problem there.
