Two people were critically injured Saturday in a pileup that involved a semi truck and nearly a dozen other vehicles on southbound I-75 just north of State Road 60, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened around noon Saturday and shut down all of the lanes on southbound I-75 for three miles, as well as State Road 60 in the area. Officials said I-75 has since then reopened.

Authorities said the crash was caused by an improper lane change.

One of the cars involved had a man that was trapped inside his vehicle. The vehicle was wedged between the semi truck and the concrete guard rail.

"Just the way that the car looked the way the accident happened I would have thought it was going to be a fatality but it turned out not to be a fatality, the patient ended up having injuries," said Ronnie Rivera, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

It took crews about one hour to extricate the man due to the severity of the accident. The patient was airlifted to a trauma center.

There were a total of seven patients that were injured. Three were in critical condition.
