The trial for a former Mango Elementary teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy began on Monday.

Ethel Anderson, 30, is facing lewd battery and lewd or lascivious molestation charges.

Investigators said Anderson engaged in sexual activity with the boy between December 2011 and February 2012.  Anderson was the victim's fifth grade teacher, according to prosecutors. She also previously taught him in first grade.

She offered to tutor the boy at her home. That's when investigators say Anderson's tutoring turned sexual.

"Ethel Anderson gave him an education he will never forget. Instead of tutoring and teaching him, which she promised her employers she would do, she became a several month long relationship with him," said prosecutor Rita Peters.

During opening statements, Peters read several racy text messages to the jury, the state says Anderson texted to the then 12 year old.

"Tell me you love me because I'm madly in love with you. You keep making me so happy," read one message.

"My heart is seriously pounding right now thinking about you. I don’t want my husband, I want you," said another.

The 12 year old then told his mother what was happening during the tutoring sessions. He says she made him touch her sexually, and performed oral sex on the young boy.

The victim's mother alerted authorities and she agreed to wear a wire during a taped conversation with Anderson. Prosecutors say on that recording, which jurors are slated to hear, she admitted to the sexual acts with her student while she was tutoring him at her home.

The state says Anderson even called the victim her boyfriend.

But the defense says the boy's story doesn't add up. Anderson's attorney, Will Knight, said the youngster was troubled and lied about the alleged abuse.

"You're going to see rock solid doubts about this young man’s testimony," Knight told the jury.

Anderson was offered a plea agreement in the case, but she turned it down.

Tuesday morning, the victim and his mother are expected to testify. The case is also slated to wrap up Tuesday afternoon.

Anderson is no longer a teacher. She was awarded the Diversity Educator of the Year Award the same year she was accused of molesting the young boy. She taught at Mango Elementary school since 2006.
