Hundreds came to Keswick Christian School on Tuesday night to remember Katie Yale, 15, the teenager injured Monday in a crash involving a personal watercraft at Lake Seminole Park.

Yale died Tuesday morning from her injuries.

Deputies said Yale was one of two girls being towed behind a 19-foot Key West center console boat while on an inner tube.

As the boat's driver, Douglas Yale, pulled the girls, deputies said Ryan Godcharles, 21, who was operating a Sea Doo personal watercraft, collided with the inner tube, sending both girls into the water.

Yale was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other girl, 13-year-old Aubree Franz, sustained minor injuries. Godcharles was not injured.

Deputies said it does not appear as though alcohol was a factor in the crash.

At the service Tuesday night, so many from the Keswick community came to weep while relying on their faith.

They are in mourning, they said, but at the same time finding peace that Katie, they said, is in a better place.

"Because so many people loved Katie, this just ripped our hearts apart," said Superintendent Nick Stratis, who taught Katie 9th grade bible class last year.

He said Katie is someone who made an impact on every life she touched. He said he was a standout on the soccer field and the volleyball court and always wore an infectious smile.

"Just a special young lady,” he said.  “Bright, intellectual, very sharp but warm, kind, loving spirit that made her classmates laugh, made all of us laugh."

Katie's two sisters also attend Keswick. Beth is an eigth-grader, Amanda is a first-grader.

Their mother, Karen, is not only an alumnus but a guidance counselor at the school, as well.

"That's where our hearts are really towards is the family and the younger siblings,” said Stratis when asked about how Katie’s parents are holding up.  “They're hanging in there,” adding, 'They're grief-stricken."

The family, he said is now leaning on their strong faith to remember, he said, that Katie is now in a much better place.

"Our hope and our faith in Jesus Christ give us security in the fact that Katie is in heaven with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, because of her walk and commitment to Him," Stratis said.

Grief counselors and local pastors were on hand at the school Tuesday to help everyone deal with this sudden loss.

Meantime, Pinellas County Sheriff’s investigators say this is an open and ongoing investigation and at this time, no charges will be filed.
