A Citrus County man isn't letting his age slow him down.

If you ever end up at Citrus Memorial Hospital you'd be lucky to run into Glen Bortell. He volunteers his time by getting patients where they need to be.

"I enjoy it," Bortell said.

He was born in 1914 so he's seen and done a lot and says he's always kept busy. Bortell was actually a state senator for Iowa during the 70's.

Bortell has logged 5,600 volunteer hours over the past nine years. He's 99 years old and says he stays young at heart by staying active.

"I'm looking for that 100," he said. "I got to keep going. I think that's one reason I'm still living."

When Bortell isn't pushing patients around he's checking in on everybody. He says his main mission all the time is to make people happy and smile and it's contagious.

"I will encourage smiles," Bortell said.

David Wells heads up the department Bortell volunteers for and says he is one of a kind.

"He'll probably be here longer than I am," Wells said.

Bortell lost his wife and decided volunteering would be a good way to get out of the house and he's sticking to his mission for as long as he can.
