Several people have been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a Pasco deputy in Zephyrhills.

Bertin Jaimes, 25, of Zephyrhills, was found in the 9800 block of Pangola Loop after an extensive search of the area and arrested for felony leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury and driving with an expired license.

Deputies also arrested Jaimes' wife, Gladys Soto, 24, of Zephyrhills, his brother Jose Jaimes, 30, and sister-in-law Jazmin Aquirde, 21 for obstruction.

Deputy Darren Hill was on routine patrol about around 4:20 a.m. in the morning when he was hit head-on. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said when you look at the damage to Hill's crusier, it’s amazing he survived.

"Thank God he's alive. If you saw pictures of the crash, it's horrible," he said.

Sheriff Nocco said the incident started during a New Year's Eve party at a house in Land O'Lakes. Deputies say Jaimes got into a fight with his wife and left the party. They said he was driving on State Road 54 heading to a relative’s house in Zephyrhills when he crossed the center line and hit Hill head-on.

"I got a call from the colonel that the first thing he says is "our member is alive," that's the first thing we want to hear is "our people are alive,” Nocco said.

Unable to speak, Hill was able to active the emergency button on his radio to get help. Deputies say Jaimes took off on foot and managed to make it to the relative’s house. They say he told his family what happened but they didn't report it.

"This family thought they could lie to us, there were actually points where our deputies were actually laughed at,” Nocco said. “They were smiling and laughing at them as they were giving them lies."

Hill suffered two broken legs and is recovering at St. Joseph's Hospital.

"Thank God our deputy is alive after a horrific crash," said Nocco. "We don't know if the suspect was intoxicated, it's too early to tell."

Hill has been with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office for about two years.

"We did not want 2014 to start off with the loss of a deputy's life, and we are fortunate that didn't happen," said Nocco.

According to the sheriff's office, Hill's cruiser sustained about $20,000 in damages.
