A motorcycle rider was killed Sunday night in a head-on collision with a car that was passing another vehicle, authorities said.

Around 5:40 p.m, Steven B. Lazzell, 52, of Kissimmee was traveling east on Johnson Avenue near Kalogridis Road on black custom motorcycle. A four-door Chrysler driven by Steven J. Maffia, 37, also of Kissimmee, was traveling west in the eastbound lane while passing another vehicle.

The motorcycle and Chrysler collided, ejecting Lazzell and sending the car careening into a ditch, authorities said.

Bystanders checked on Lazzell, who was not wearing a helmet, and helped to get Maffia out of his vehicle while using a fire extinguisher on some smoke coming from the vehicle.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and Lazzell was pronounced dead. Maffia was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital with minor injuries.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
