Lucas Overby is running as a Libertarian for the District 13 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

1. Why are you running for this office?

I feel now, more than ever, this nation is suffering from the inability of our elected officials to work together and find solutions for their constituents. When you are an activist working with young and often little-known causes, you learn to effectively produce results with no resources and you do that by forming coalitions and partnerships wherever you can.

I feel that the ability to make things work, with little care to who gets the credit, will allow me to really accomplish what needs to be done for the constituents of my district.

2. Why do you think you are the best qualified candidate for the office?

I come from a world that starts before the sun is up and ends long after it goes down. I have worked with just about every major industry in our state, every regulatory body, and learned what’s broken in our system by actually working under it.

Since I am not beholden to special interests or partisanship, I can focus on what District 13 and what Florida need. I know what issues we face in Pinellas, because I have been working with them my whole life, alongside many of you.

3. If you are elected, what will be your top priorities?

To start, Tax Reform, the current tax code is intricate and cumbersome, relying on an interwoven system of loopholes and deductions to balance out already high taxes. My focus has been on simplifying the tax code and reducing the overall tax burden.

Next, is our veterans, we are in the midst of another conflict, and we have yet to fulfill our obligation to those who have served. When we see defense spending cuts, our obligations to them should not be considered, yet has been constantly the first thing we cut.

2015 is going to be a big year. I will also continue fighting for comprehensive immigration reform, LGBTQ equality, Women’s Rights, and tackling the issues of government transparency.
