Some students at Weeki Wachee High School no longer have to wait until school gets out to focus on video games.

Thanks to a new program called Video Game Design and Simulation, students get to make video games. It's the first class of its kind in the school district.

"Any little morsel we can give them to help them further themselves in technology will allow them to maybe be a step ahead of the 48 people in front of them in that interview line," teacher Chris Clifford said.

The program focuses on game design, but the curriculum also aims to give students a leg up in the tech world. They are learning how to make smartphone apps and earning computer program certifications that look great on a resume.

Student Evan Chapman said that when he graduates, he'll be ahead of the game.

"People are in college taking college courses to learn what we are learning," he said.

The program's relaxed atmosphere - with dim lighting, music and even popcorn - is a way to promote creativity. Clifford says so far his students are doing some amazing things.

"It is a very meaningful opportunity for our students," he said.

The classes are offered to all grade levels as an elective and get more advanced each year.
