City of St. Petersburg hoping to reduce false security alarms

City leaders in St. Petersburg are working on a plan to reduce the number of false security alarms.

Last year, police responded to more than 9,700 calls from false alarms, costing the city nearly $275,000.

Under the plan, the city would do away with permit and renewal fees and hike up fines for false alarms that police respond to.

The city council will make its final approval of the plan next month.
