A SWAT situation has ended in Auburndale after a man barricaded inside an apartment was taken into custody.

Police responded to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Adams Street at 10 a.m. after reports of shots fired during a domestic dispute.

When officers arrived on the scene, a woman was fleeing the apartment. According to the victim, the man had fired two rounds from a .38-caliber handgun.

According to police, the man, identified as John Jerome Rogers, barricaded himself inside a unit. A few hours later, officers gained entry to the apartment and took Rogers into custody. Police said he appeared disoriented and was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

The East Area Adult School, located near the apartment complex, was placed on lockdown during the standoff. Residents in the neighborhood were also evacuated and surrounding streets were shut down.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office assisted Auburndale police with its SWAT Team.
