A ministry at Saint Paul United Methodist Church offers a place for those with special challenges to worship.

The "Handicapable Ministry" started in 1997 with director Horton Townes and hosts Wednesday evening services.

"Handicapable" is a combination of the words "handicapped" and "capable." The emphasis is on "capable."

Horton explained the importance of focusing on the needs of the ministry's worshippers.

“Well, one of the things they’re meeting among their peers," he said. "They’re meeting among their friends. They’ll feel more comfortable here. It’s an opportunity for fellowship. They love to sing. We spend 30 minutes singing (in a way) you couldn’t do at a regular service.”

The services have ballooned in popularity. In 1997, just seven people attended. Now, services average more than 200. For those who flock to the Handicapable Ministry, it’s a chance to spread their wings.

“When they first came in, they were very shy," Horton said. "Some would just put their heads down on the table. Now, they’re some of the ones who want to come up and grab a mic and either lead the singing or tell a story."

The Handicapable Ministry ministry also offers trips to baseball games, computer classes, working with those involved in the Special Olympics, talent shows and parties.
