Two Walmart clerks pistol-whipped during an attempted robbery last week spoke out Tuesday.

The robbery happened Friday afternoon at the Walmart liquor store located at 7450 Cypress Gardens Blvd., police said.

According to investigators, the man walked into the store at 12:31 p.m. and walked briefly around the store to see if anyone else was present.

The suspect approached one counter, put a small item down to be scanned, then pulled out a gun on the clerk, identified as 75-year-old James Thompson, police said.

"He said give me the money, give me the money, give me the money,” Thompson said.

When Thompson couldn't get into the cash register fast enough and hit a panic button the violence started. The man bashed Thompson in the head with the gun and Thompson fell to the floor bleeding.

"I don't think he wanted to shoot me but if something would have gone wrong I think he would have,” he said.

The suspect turned to the second clerk, identified as 50-year-old Angelita Velasquez, and commanded her to open her drawer, police said. Velasquez tried to open the drawer but before she could do so, the suspect hit her twice on the side of the head.

"When I saw him hit…strike him in the head and he went down, I really thought he was going to come after me and shoot me,” she said.

The suspect then left the store empty-handed, police said.

Thompson and Velasquez were taken to Winter Haven Hospital to be treated for gashes to their heads. Thompson said he went back to work a couple of days later because he didn't want people to worry about him. Velasquez said she's still too traumatized to go back to work.

"I am not going to lie to you. I am terrified. I am having trouble leaving the house. It was very hard for me to come here. I didn't want to,” she said. “In order for the law to do their job we need him to get caught."

The suspect is described as a black man between 50 and 60 years old. He stands 5'7" to 5'9" with a medium build, is clean-shaven, has no accent and has pock marks on his face.

The suspect was wearing a blue hoodie, a black baseball cap, jean shorts with light-colored piping on the pockets, white socks and boots with possibly a blue rim on the top.

A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information that leads to the identity and arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
