The driver responsible for the I-275 wrong-way crash that killed five people early Sunday was a 28-year-old man who recently moved here from Michigan, the Florida Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Daniel Lee Morris came to Tampa from St. Claire Shores, Mich., and was living with a friend, 27-year-old Scott Eric Enfinger, the FHP said.
Troopers said Morris took Enfinger's 2001 Ford Expedition and was driving south in the northbound lanes of the interstate around 2 a.m. when he collided with a Hyundai Sonata carrying four young men.
The collision happened just north of Busch Boulevard, and the large sport utility vehicle burst into flames. Morris and the four occupants of the Hyundai - all members of the USF off-campus fraternity Sigma Beta Rho - were killed.
Because Morris was burned beyond recognition, his identity wasn't confirmed by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office until Tuesday.
Investigators are still trying to determine where Morris entered the interstate and whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Toxicology results could take weeks to come back.
The four occupants of the Hyundai were previously identified as driver Jobin Kuriakose, 21, and passengers Ankeet Patel, 22, Imtiyaz Ilias, 20 and Dammie Yesudhas, 21.
Patel and Yesudhas were from Melbourne, Kuriakose was from Orlando and Ilias was from Fort Myers.
