A farm in Hernando County has little to do with animals and everything to do with cultivating better lives.

Christine Collins started the Pay It Forward Farm in Spring Hill. The farm gives single moms, some from abusive homes and some homeless, a place to grow a better life for their families. The idea came to Collins more than three years ago.

“This actually came about as an answer to a dream that I had of helping single moms because I myself was a single mom for many, many years. And I always got a lot of help from people,” Collins said.

Inside the farm, several career option classes are taught including cooking and nutrition, Microsoft Office Suite certification, writing, resume building and much more.

“So when a mom comes here, if she doesn’t have a drivers license or doesn’t have a G.E.D. or whatever is holding her back from being successful, we start making plans to address that,” Collins said.

For those enrolled at GED prep classes taught by volunteer educators will begin in April.

The Pay It Forward Farm is a non-profit organization that welcomes volunteers of all skill levels.
