Detectives are now investigating a shooting that took place Monday at a Holiday chiropractic center as a self-defense case, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.

Jamie Velez, 34, entered the West Coast Spine and Injury Center at 1817 U.S. 19 just before 11 a.m. and was shot during an altercation with Dr. Lenny Linardos, the sheriff's office said previously.

Tuesday, the sheriff's office said Velez arrived at the office with rubber gloves and a gun. A confrontation ensued, and Linardos, who was also armed, shot Velez, detectives said.

Velez was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and remained in critical condition Tuesday, authorities said.

The sheriff's office is calling it a domestic dispute, saying Velez was having an affair with one of Linardos's employees and Linardos told Velez's girlfriend.

"I can tell you that he defended himself yesterday against a violent attack by an individual that was intent on causing him harm,” said Linardos’ attorney, Cimos Angelis.

Velez's Facebook page shows just hours before the shooting, Linardos posted a comment on a photo of Velez and his girlfriend, calling him a liar.

"It was a traumatic situation that he (Linardos) went through yesterday as you can understand,” said Angelis. “And he's not a violent person by any means."

Investigators said Linardos won't be facing any charges.

The sheriff's office said Linardos received threats from Velez the morning of the shooting and called to report them.

A sign on the door says the office will be closed until Thursday.
