A Plant City commissioner says he wants to clear his name in connection with the police chief's sex scandal.

Commissioner Billy Keel said he did not use his position of power to try and get the chief's mistress not to talk to investigators. Now keel's calling for an impartial review of the allegations.

Keel has been under scrutiny since this sworn video statement by Melissa Hardwick came out last week.

Melissa told investigators that Keel sent her friend a text asking Hardwick to keep quiet about her affair with Police Chief Steven Singletary.

"Billy Keel texted my friend Kayla and was talking to her about it," said Hardwick.

Investigator: "Can you tell us what it said?"

Hardwick: "That, the, his job depends on whether or not I think it said testified."

As you can see, Hardwick did not keep quiet and Chief Singletary was fired for misconduct last Wednesday.

Today, Keel released a letter saying he did not try to influence a witness while under investigation.

Keel wrote:

"I can assure you that any comments I had on the matter were simply as a concerned friend... I in no way used or attempted to use my position as city commissioner of the city of Plant City to intervene in this or any other investigation."

Hardwick told investigators that Keel was Singletary's close friend and twice allowed the chief to hide his police car at a business that keel co-owns.

Investigator: "I guess I’m trying to understand why, because Billy Keel owns Matrix Medical, does Steve feel comfortable leaving his police car in that parking lot all day?"

Hardwick: "Billy would check on it, I assume."

Investigator: "So, he knew it was there?"

Hardwick: "Mm-hmm."

Investigator: "How did you know that?"

Hardwick: "Because Steve told me."

In that letter, Keel says he wants to clear his name.

"The commission by way of unanimous vote... Ask the city manager to send a request to an independent agency like FDLE, or the ethics commission, asking that they review the allegations that have been made against me, and make a determination based on the facts and the law."

It looks like Keel's wish for a review of the allegations may come true. The Plant City manager says he's going to ask the city commission at Monday night's meeting to authorize him to forward the investigative report to the FDLE or ethics commission.

The city manager's request to forward the investigative report is already on the city commission agenda.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
