A 7-year-old boy was killed while riding his dirt bike during a race in Myakka City.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Evan Max, of Pompano Beach was riding his dirt bike when he struck an adult rider around 9:30 a.m. at 40715 Clay Gully Road.

Lynwood Ansley, who was monitoring the race, was on a motorcycle riding the perimeter looking for another rider that he thought may have fallen down.

Officials said Ansley crossed the track next to a tree and failed to see Max approaching.

Max apparently also failed to see Lynwood, officials said, and struck the rear portion of Lynwood's motorcycle.

Max was seriously injured and transported to the hospital where he later died.

Officials said about 15 children, ages 5 to 8, were racing in the event held by Florida Trail Riders Association.
