Is your personal information at risk?

That is a question for all consumers but became even more relevant in the wake of the massive credit card and debit card data breach during the recent holidays.

The breach affected millions of retail customers, including Target shoppers.

Retail and other company executives, security experts and computer technicians are among those meeting in Tampa Monday at the University of South Florida for a conference on cyber security.

Sri Sridharin, who heads USF's cyber security division said the conference will be an important opportunity for companies to learn how to combat hackers.

"We're going to get their (retail companies) perspective on how important this issue is, how are they dealing with it, how does it affect them on a daily basis,"  Sridharin said. "(And) what actions they're taking to be proactive in the market place."

Tampa Electric is one of the companies taking part in the conference. With more than 500,000 customers managing their accounts online, TECO officials say keeping information secure is a priority.

"Participating in this panel will allow us to make sure that we are absolutely up to date with the most robust security measures that folks can take to protect customer data and to protect our physical equipment as well," said TECO Spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs.

Sridharin added conferences like this are important because the ongoing cyber war is only just beginning.

"We've got to be really smart," he said. "And it is almost guessing what they're (hackers) are going to do next, and get ahead of the game."
