The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths of a family found inside a burning Tampa home as a murder-suicide.

Two adults and two teenagers were found in the rubble of an early morning house fire in the exclusive Avila community north of Tampa Wednesday.

Investigators have identified the victims as Darrin Campbell, his wife, Kimberly and two children, 19-year-old Colin and 16-year-old Megan.

At a news conference Friday, Colonel Donna Lusczynski said Darrin Campbell shot and killed his family, set the home on fire and then shot and killed himself.

"Darrin Campbell systematically (with the gun registered to him) shot his son, daughter, and wife in the head. He then placed fireworks throughout the residence, used an accelerant to assist him lighting the fire, lit the fire, and shot himself," she said. "At this time, we don’t know the order this occurred and I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to determine that."

Detectives said Darrin Campbell purchased gas cans from a local home improvement store on May 4th at 8 a.m. and then filled with gasoline at two local gas stations on May 6th.

He purchased the fireworks on Sunday, William Weimer, vice president of Phantom fireworks, said Thursday by telephone from the company's Ohio headquarters.

Lusczynski said they are still investigating the motive and in the process of interviewing friends, family members and coworkers.

Detectives confirmed that Darrin Campbell had recently taken a few days off from work. A financial audit of Darrin Campbell is also being conducted.

Neighbors said Colin Campbell was excited to graduate and start playing college ball.

"Colin was all set to go to University of Virginia on a baseball scholarship. Megan was terrific. She was great. I can't even tell you. All I can say is its sad,” said Richard Corbett.

The family moved to Avila two years ago from their home in Westchase. They won an award four years in a row for their elaborate holiday decorations. They accepted contributions to view the display. Colin and Megan gave the money, nearly $4,000, to Metropolitan Ministries.

Darrin Campbell has no criminal history and no documented history of mental illness, according to detectives.

The Avila home is owned by former tennis star James Blake. Blake was renting the house to the Campbell family and was not there at the time.
