A pilot was killed when a plane crashed into the runway at Tampa Executive Airport on Sunday.

According to reports, the single engine plane crashed just before 4 p.m. during takeoff at the airport located at 6530 Tampa Executive Road in Tampa.

The plane had just taken off when for unknown reasons it went down and crashed.

The pilot, Ki L. Martin, 53, of Wimauma died at the scene.

There were no other people on the plane.

Officials said a nearby driver witnessed the crash and called 911.

"The interstate is not very far, so apparently one of the 911 calls came in from a motorist that was passing by along the interstate," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry McKinnon. "It had to be quite shocking for them as well."

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash.
