Zephyrhills Fire Chief Verne Riggall may be out of work by next week.

The city has spent two months investigating complaints against Riggall and now City Manager Steve Spina wants him fired.

Spina sent a report to the city council listing his concerns. Among them at least five related to safety issues, including everything from not putting enough people on a fire truck to not having the right equipment on board.

"You are required by law to carry certain pieces of equipment, that when you arrive on scene, you have the tools you need to do the job," said Spina.

During an interview, Riggall admitted he knew about the issue but said the department had still passed inspection recently.

When asked about not having enough people on the trucks, Riggall defended his decision, saying it was efficient.

The investigation also revealed the chief scheduled odd hours for himself and did personal business on the job.

Riggall plans to defend himself next Monday when city leaders decide what to do next.
