A bicyclist whom investigators believe was already lying in the street was run over and and pronounced dead early Saturday in southeast Tampa.

According to Tampa police, a 2002 Honda Civic was traveling north on 50th Street N north of Adamo Drive when the driver saw a bicycle lying in the road. The driver attempted to brake, but still ran over the bike and the rider.

James W. Mingo Jr., 40, died at the scene. Investigators didn't speculate why he was in the lying in the street or whether he was injured or dead before being struck.

"Damage to the vehicle is consistent with the deceased lying prone in the roadway at the time of impact," police said in a press release, which did not name the driver.

The northbound lanes of 50th Street N were closed while authorities investigated. The road has since been reopened.
