School leaders hope if they put a bus stop on Hillsborough Avenue, students will stop crossing in the middle of the road.

The decision comes after two students were hit and killed trying to cross the busy street to get to Middleton High School.

The Department of Transportation is doing a study to see how it can make Hillsborough Avenue safer for people to cross but in the meantime, Hillsborough County schools are going to be putting a bus stop near the Meridian Pointe Apartment complex for the upcoming school year.

Putting a bus stop near the complex is an unusual move for the district because it is less than a mile away from the school. Transportation is generally only provided if you're two miles away.

Since dozens of students live at the complex and there's been a problem with jaywalking, the district says it's worth it.

Parents seem to agree.

"Look at what happened to kids who were killed there,” said Christa Chjuste. “Look at that traffic, it’s crazy."

"I think that would be good for them,” said Mealinda Wright. “That way they won't be so active and trying to go through traffic and what not."

The specifics about when students will be picked up and dropped off are still being worked out.

The school district plans to notify parents and guardians of students who will be affected within the next few weeks.

After last year's accident the district provided a shuttle bus for the Meridian Apartment students.

School officials say most of the kids took advantage of that ride.
