The fight to find a cure for cancer is personal for a local fitness guru.

Chip Wright is the manager for the wellness center at GTE Financial in Tampa. Chip lost two close friends to cancer and decided to do something about it.

He decided to do pushups.

It’s all part of a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

“I’m doing a charity for the American Cancer Society to do 20,000 pushups in the month of July,” Wright said. “So that gives me 31 days. I had to pick a month with 31 days, and it comes to 645 a day.”

Wright does the pushups in sets throughout the day, doing about a couple dozen at a time.

He doesn’t consider himself a hero.

“What I’m doing pales by comparison to what kids in St. Jude’s are going through or what loved ones are facing with people who are battling cancer,” Wright said. “So those are really the ones that are heroes.”
