Linda Lerner is running for the District 6 seat on the Pinellas County School Board.

1. Why are you running for office?

I am seeking another term on the School Board because my qualifications, experience, knowledge and strong community involvement are needed at this time of many challenges and opportunities for our district.

As a school board member, I have frequently visited schools, thoroughly researched issues and have been responsive to both individuals and groups. I believe that a strong public education system is the greatest protector of our democracy.

I will continue to take a leadership role in advocating for valid accountability, adequate funding and a district that continues to be more accessible and accountable to all our stakeholders.

It has been a privilege to serve on the Board for many years. I remain committed and motivated to be part of the Board and Superintendent leadership team which recognizes our successes while focusing on improvement.

2. Why do you think you are the best qualified candidate for the office?

My qualifications are directly related to my record of service to the community, school district and our students.

Shortly after moving to Pinellas County in 1975, I became co-founder and Director of Education Support Services at FACE Learning Center which later was called Resource Center for Women. I worked at the Center for ten years and provided services and classes in many county locations including the Pinellas County Jail and Largo Work Release Center.

I also taught continuing education classes for St. Petersburg Jr. College, and wrote a My View column for the St. Petersburg Times. I have a strong continuing record of community service and my complete resume is on my website. My leadership positions in many coalition efforts has enhanced my skills to help diverse groups work together to strengthen our schools and community.

3. If you are elected, what will be your top priorities?

As a member for the Pinellas Education Foundation Career Education Board, I will continue to take a leadership role in the successful expansion of our Career/Technical courses and programs. Students are increasingly gaining the skills and industry certifications which will lead to good jobs as well as part or full-time postsecondary education.

The classroom teacher and parental involvement are the two most important factors influencing student achievement. I will continue to support initiatives and collaborative efforts to strengthen the relationship between the school and parents or guardians.

I will remain committed to the goal of raising our teachers’ salaries to above the national average, and continue to support and provide leadership to enhance the professional stature of teachers by giving them more real influence on the decisions that affect their schools and classrooms.

The challenge to equitably fund and support schools continues to be an issue which the District needs to address. I believe public school choice includes both the decision to stay at the zoned school or attend another school which has a special program.

With limited resources it is the responsibility of the Board and Superintendent to allocate funds to the largest extent possible to meet the needs of all our schools and students. Every school needs to be a good choice.
