Donald Whiting is running for the District 1 seat on the Hernando County School Board.

1. Why are you running for this office?

There is a growing concern in Hernando County, in the state of Florida and nationally that our educational system is not accomplishing all it should do or all it can do. The students, parents, and educators with whom I have discussed this concern believe our schools are educating students reasonably well; however, a better job must be done to enable the students of Hernando County to compete in a global economy.

The entrepreneurial spirit that drives our economy can and should be inspired by our educational system. Vocational training and college preparation studies can be accomplished only with quality leadership and direction.

If we can dynamically engage our students to achieve the education they and their parents desire, our dropout rates will decrease and our graduation rates will increase. Students, parents, educators and our entire community need to believe that we all must work together as a team to provide our students with a meaningful and productive educational experience.

2. Why do you think you are the best qualified candidate for the office?

I have built a successful business and balanced many budgets, I am highly qualified to help direct the Hernando County School Board at this critical time.

I have been a small business owner in Hernando County for 32 years and have remained fiscally responsible through periodic downturns to our local economy.  I have done this in the spirit of honesty and integrity which is evidenced by a loyal clientele and staff.  I wish to bring this same strength in character and fiscal understanding to the school board.

For a decade I volunteered on the Hernando County Aviation Authority Board (the county’s largest economic engine).  I am a flight leader for the Young Eagles program through our local Experimental Aircraft Association.  Spending time inspiring young aviators reflects my interest and ability to integrate my business acumen with my drive to help shape our young minds.

During more than three decades in Hernando County, I have had five children in school: two who have gone on to complete graduate school, one about to begin classes in a Florida university, and two who are in middle and high school. I have served on a School Advisory Council to help with school direction; taught in the Junior Achievement program; been a Big Brother; coached and led the board of West Hernando Little League.

I am the candidate with a track record of personal outreach and business integrity, a necessary requirement for an effective member of the Hernando County School Board.

3. If you are elected, what will be your top priorities?

  • Safety of our students
  • Fiscal responsibility
  • Vocational/Technical Program
  • Open communication with parents
