Several races in Manatee County are too close to call.

In the Commission District 2 Democratic Primary, incumbent Michael Gallen and Palmetto City Commissioner Charles Smith both received 35 percent of the vote, with 99 percent of precincts reporting.

Corie Holmes received 30 percent of the vote. No winner has been called yet for that race, as of 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

District 2 is considered the urban core of the county, encompassing predominantly minority neighborhoods in East Palmetto, East Bradenton, Palm View and Ellenton.

In the Commission District 4 GOP primary, incumbent Manatee County Commissioner Robin DiSabatino, who was running for her second term, successfully won with 66 percent of the vote.

School board races

Over the past few years, the Manatee County School District has faced issues ranging from major budget woes to former faculty lawsuits and trials to poor student achievement.

Residents voted on three school board seats in Districts 2, 4, and 5.

In District 2, newcomer Charlie Kennedy, a Manatee High School teacher, won with 56 percent of the vote.

In District 4, current school board member Karen Carpenter won with 61 percent of the vote.

And in District 5, current School Board Chair Julie Aranibar will face off with former Director of Manatee Technical Institute Mary Stewart Cantrell in a runoff election. Aranibar received 37 percent of the vote, Cantrell received 35 percent.
