A sinkhole that swallowed part of a Spring Hill road last month may still pose some problems for residents.

The sinkhole opened up near the intersection of Eldridge Road and Van Allen Way on July 19.  By the time the sinkhole stopped growing that night, it was 40 yards by 40 yards and about 30 feet deep.

Residents in the area are a little worried. Kate Carter, who lives in the area, said she's still very uneasy about the sinkhole.

"You know you just wonder," she said. "You step on a little soft spot and you don't know if you're going 60 feet down or not. It's just really scary."

According to a new engineering report, there could still be some problems ahead. The report found a possible void located about 70 feet underground, near the location of the first sinkhole.

The report suggests that the void should be filled to stabilize the ground, but county officials think differently.

"I would say not to worry," said county engineer Mark Guttman. "If you look at other sinkhole reports, it is typical that there are anomalous conditions throughout Spring Hill."

Guttman says there's nothing alarming or unusual in the report. He says things like possible voids show up every time they fix a sinkhole and it doesn't make sense to spend money to try and fix every one they find.

"If we got to testing somewhere close by, chances are we would find similar results," he said.

That's some comforting news for Carter, helping to ease her sinkhole fears.

"I love Spring Hill and will definitely be here for a while at least," she said.

County officials say they are keeping an eye on things around the neighborhood. They check on it every week. After a while they will check on it every month.
