A Bay area man said a church canceled his husband's funeral once he found out he was gay.

Julion Evans died from a rare disease called amyloidosis.

The family said they arranged to have his funeral at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa. But just before the funeral, the family said the pastor called to say they couldn't hold services there because Julion was gay and it would be blasphemy.

The family said the last minute change really sent them scrambling.

"I just felt like the church let us down during our time of need, and that's what they're there for, they're supposed to help you," said Julion's husband, Kendall Capers. "They're supposed to guide you and walk you through and they closed the door on us."

In the end, the family held the service at the funeral home where the wake was held.

Bay News 9 tried to contact the pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend T.W. Jenkins. He did not return messages.
