A dad is grieving the loss of his son, Daniel Irizarry, 37, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in Largo.

"It’s so hard for me," said the victim's dad, Charles Irizarry.

The crash happened while Irizarry was riding his motor scooter on U.S. 19 near 150th Avenue about 12:40 a.m. when the driver of a silver car struck him from behind, according to police.

The impact threw Irizarry into the roadway, where he was run over and killed by a second car that fled the scene, according to detectives.

The victim's dad had this message for that hit-and-run driver.

"What are you such a coward you couldn’t stop? You hurt somebody," he said. "You went over a body. You must’ve known something was wrong."

The dad said he also feels bad because he recently purchased that motor scooter for his son.

"It’s ironic that I bought the motor scooter and a few weeks later, because he was on a scooter, he got hit from behind and he’s dead," Charles Irizarry said. "I felt funny because if I didn’t do it maybe this wouldn’t have happened."

Witnesses describe that second car as a dark colored, four-door compact with missing hubcaps and black steel wheels. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Officer Keith Snyder at (727) 587-6730.
