Fire officials in Citrus County are investigating a fire at a summer camp.

According to Citrus Fire Rescue, a building at the Good Counsel Summer Camp, at 8888 East Gobbler Drive in Floral City, was destroyed by fire overnight.

A helicopter spotted the flames just after midnight and reported the fire. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames.

The building and its contents, valued at more than $400,000, are a total loss. The building housed the camp's cafeteria and kitchen.

There was no one in the building and there were no injuries.

Monsignor George Cummings founded the camp. He built the dining hall.

“Lots of history, lots of kids had good times here," he said.

And for 30 of those years, Camp director James Jonson ate at the tables inside.

"Seeing it all go up in flames and knowing that some of these items can never be replaced, it makes you sick," Johnson.

Heart sick counselor, Mark Alego first came here 40 years ago.

"This place is special it holds special memories," he said. "It touched my heart as a teen and when you are a teen you can in go into a lot of different directions but this place got me to a good path."
