Defense lawyers called a U.S. Marine to the stand Friday to testify for a former Marine accused of shooting a Hillsborough County deputy.

Matthew Buendia is accused of shooting Deputy Lyonelle De Veaux in October 2011 while he was responding to a 911 call Buendia's girlfriend made during a heated argument.

The deputy survived the shooting.

Staff Sergeant William Wallace testified Friday that during their tours of duty together in Iraq and Afghanistan, they faced life and death situations daily and even fell under attack from supposed allied forces they were training.

"The Iraqi police did (attack us) in the neighboring town," says Wallace. "And then in Afghanistan we had one of the Afghan Army individuals killed -- one of my very good friends."

Defense lawyers argue that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder lead to Buendia shooting the deputy, thinking he was under attack.

Prosecutors contend that he had planned to shoot the deputy.

On Monday, defense lawyers are expect to call medical experts to the stand to offer crucial testimony into Buendia's mental state leading up to the shooting.
