The St. Petersburg Police Dept. is testing their employees’ facial recognition skills.

This is not conducted by a computer, but rather a human ability to look at a photo or video of a suspect and successfully match it to a person in a booking photo.

The department teamed up with two of the nation's premier researchers in the field of study, Dr. Brad Duchaine of Dartmouth College and Dr. Laura Germine of Harvard University, to test all employees at no cost.

The department said it's the first law enforcement agency in the U.S. to scientifically identify its employees who are most skilled at facial recognition.

The use of "Super Recognizers" to assist in solving crimes is a practice used by the London Metropolitan Police in England since 2011.

The top two percent of employees tested will be the department's "super recognizers," and may be called upon to help with special investigations.
