Matthew Buendia decided not to take the stand in his attempted murder trial on Wednesday.

Buendia is relying on statements from witnesses, lawyers and doctors to show he was legally insane when he shot Deputy Lyonelle De Veauz in 2011.

The defense called their last witness to the stand -- a forensic psychologist who testified that flashbacks from war caused Buendia to snap.

"Part of his mind may have well been begging for help and relief from the pain he had been experiencing," said Blank. "A combat veteran with this much untreated PTSD is not an average person."

The prosecution will call its own doctors.

The trial could wrap up this week. Buendia faces life in prison if he is convicted.
