Veterans Day has come and gone, but a local VFW Post in Citrus County is remembering somebody special on a big anniversary.

VFW Post 4337 in Inverness is now 70 years old. The place means a lot to many veterans like Bob Sprute.

"This provides us with a place where we can sit and talk to each other," Sprute said. "Talk about experiences."

There's more to this story, so let's introduce Eugene Quinn. The VFW Post is named after him for good reason. Quinn was the first to die from Citrus County during World War II.

Quinn went to Citrus High School and then joined the Army Air Corps in 1940. He was later captured and then killed on a Japanese ship that was transporting prisoners. The ship was hit by a U.S. torpedo. Martin Kloubec is post commander.

"So it's an honor that we carry his name on," he said.

"Absolutely, absolutely and never going to replace it as long as this post is here," Sprute said.

"70 years is something to be very proud of," Kloubec said.

Seven decades and still going strong, while honoring a man who lost his life serving his country.
